Heart With Joy by Steve Cushman

Sometimes, there comes along a book that is simply a joy to read, and a pleasure to recommend. "Heart With Joy" by Steve Cushman is one of those books!

About The Book:

In Heart with Joy, 15-year-old Julian Hale s life is turned upside down when his mother suddenly moves from North Carolina to Venice, Florida, under the pretense of running her parents nine-room motel and finishing the novel she has been working on for years. Julian is forced to stay with his father until the end of the school year.

Three weeks after his mother leaves, Julian s father decides to run a marathon. This surprises Julian because he has never seen his father exercise. But once Julian agrees to help with training, the two develop the sort of close relationship they ve never had before.

Meanwhile, with the help of an elderly neighbor, Julian learns that the most important thing in life is to follow your heart. His heart leads him to a passion for cooking and a young cashier at the local grocery store. Once so eager to live with his mother, Julian must choose between staying with his father over the summer and going to live with his mother.

Heart with Joy is a literary coming-of-age novel that explores how sometimes the things you need most in life have been there, right beside you, all along.

My Thoughts:

In his brilliant coming-of-age novel, “Heart With Joy,” North Carolina author Steve Cushman had crafted a charmingly enchanting story of love and the pursuit of finding one’s way in the often-confusing world of today. Cushman perfectly captures the angst and surprising maturity of a young teenage boy struggling to do what he knows is right in this engaging novel that would be ideal for teens, young adults and adults alike to enjoy. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

(Plus, I have big "cover art" love for this book!)
