Another Busy Weekend...

Summer sure seems to be flying by. It's hard to believe it's already July 4th this weekend.
We had a blast Friday night at Matt and Carrie's for our big play date with Alexa's old friends from New Horizon. They kids were a bit shy at first, but didn't take them long to reacquaint themselves. It was amazing to see how much Connor and Nathaniel had grown and their little brothers, too. They were all happy to meet Lillian for the first time, as she was a far off twinkle last time we were together. It was so nice to visit with all the parents while the kids played. We ate pizza, played at the park and then came back for ice cream cake. We left agreeing to get together again very soon.

Saturday consisted of running errands most of the day. I had gotten Alexa a bike on freecycle that we picked up in Burnsville, then stopped at Rainbow for groceries and then Sam's Club for more groceries. Alexa rode bike while Lillian and I took a nap. We woke up just in time for me to get ready for our dinner date with Vic and Sara. Nicole and Mackenzie came over to babysit, so Adam and I could have a night to ourselves. We took our first trip to "Hastings" and picked up some cheesecake before heading to their house. Vic was busy at the grill and Sara was putting together a beautiful salad. We had such a nice visit with them and the meal was outstanding. Adam and I are now obsessed with popovers and honey butter. :) After dinner we took a walk to downtown Hastings for the car show. I was more concerned with walking off the huge meal we ate than looking at the cars - whew! We met up with some of their friends and their adorable twin girls. They have to be in the top 10 cutest babies I've ever seen. I fell in love with one of them and wanted to take her home, but Adam insisted I give her back.

We stopped back at their house for some cheesecake, before I started missing my babies and wanted to get home. They were soundly sleeping in their beds when we got there - Mackenzie and Alexa were sleeping side by side - so cute!

Lillian woke up around 2 in the morning with a fever. She slept by me the rest of the night and was warm pretty much all night, but slept well. I gave her some Motrin in the morning and that seemed to help for awhile, but her fever was back after the martin wore off. She snuggled with me most of the day, which I didn't mind. Adam was up early and got the lawn mowed and started the grill for Uncle Benski's 21st birthday lunch. Him and his friend Dan came over and Benny and Isaac. We had chicken, pork chops, brats and hot dogs...a feast! :) The guys played kick ball and horseshoes in the back yard and we hung out with the kids in the garage. Alexa has made best friends with the neighbor across the street, Madison - so they played and rode bike and ran around the yard.

We also decided to take part in one of the many "Dew Day" events in Farmington and went to the parade Sunday afternoon. Benski and Dan came with us and we found a great spot on the corner. We brought Maddie along and her and Alexa filled a bag full of candy and managed to score a few freezies, too. We cut out early as the sun was beating down on us raising Lil's temp even more. We kept her out of the heat the rest of the day.

Lillian has become quite the little singer. She sings the wheels on the bus, and does all the actions. She sings the ABC's and counts 2-10. She always skips the 1. Ha! She loves to sing kids bop in the car and even Josh Groban. She is the cutest little thing ever - so cute I could chew on her.

The weather was much cooler yesterday - Adam's parks are closed for the week and so he's able to be with us in the evenings. We are LOVING it!! We took a walk last night (I was in jeans and a sweatshirt) and I watched the Bachelorette in the garage while the kids played and rode bike. Lillian took a digger into a wood panel we have in the garage and is sporting a beautiful black eye. My poor baby! Alexa is as sassy as ever ( I guess that's what we get for letting her hang out with older kids - Madison is 6 ).

Adam and I both had physicals today at the clinic. I had a fun yearly exam, too. Other than the doctor telling me I'm 5-10 lbs under weight, I'm as healthy as can be. My blood pressure was even spot on! Oh - and I need a mole removed off my left cheek. Yikes!
Adam has his nasty foot issue - but he got a prescription for it and hopefully it will be cleared up within the next 3-5 months. I can't wait.

Reagan and "Girl"

Today Reagan and I decided to celebrate her potty training success by building a bear at, well, Build-A-Bear. (go figure on that one!) Reagan was so excited and yes, a little overwhelmed. (I'd probably wait a little while longer to do it with another kid.) She picked out an adorable black bear, gave it big girl panties, a denim skirt and a purple shirt with an owl on it. When asked what her bear's name was so I could fill out the 'birth' certificate, she said "Her name is Girl".....and so, that's what she's called.

Right now they're both sacked out in bed, snoozing nap time happily away. I should take a clue from them!

DEJA VU

Two years after graduating from the high school, and armed only with self-confidence, high school diploma, and typing ability, I left my hometown for Manila to search for a job. Young and pretty smart (excuse me for being so presumptuous), I was hired as Secretary to the General Manager of a manufacturing firm in Frisco, Quezon City.

Then, after nearly a couple of years, I left my work for a greener pasture in the American Base in Subic Bay where, despite the odds, I fortunately landed in a far better-paying job than the one I left in Quezon City.

During that time, job opportunities in Saudi Arabia and other Middle East countries were still unheard of such that even if mine was but a rank-and-file position, I took my job with a great deal of pride.

Greater opportunities could have come my way but for a strange quirk of fate, a series of traumatic and unpleasant events started coming in and blocked my way from grabbing those golden opportunities.

Long distance calls kept bugging me as I was busy with my work. My younger brother would relay to me disheartening news that my father was brought to the hospital. The next day or two, my brother would again call informing me that our second-to-the-eldest brother was likewise brought to the hospital. Then I would receive another phone call for another bad news which said my youngest brother was being sued for an alleged offense I can no longer recall.

That same week, I received threatening letters from my grandfather’s only sister warning me that if we would not leave the place where our old house stood, she would confront my mother everyday. She then sent me via mail a copy of the case she filed in court that made me very, very anxious and frantically nervous.

This avalanche of trying circumstances occurred when I haven’t gotten over yet with my breakup with the person I used to call my best friend who was then a great source of my inner strength.

Those stormy experiences tortured me and gave me sleepless nights that eventually led to nervous breakdown.

In what I had experienced, nervous breakdown seemed like some sort of possession of the mind. It was like a bondage… a slavery… a demonic oppression. I sought professional help, periodically saw a psychiatrist for so many years but he told me I was hopeless as far as medicine is concerned. I gotta find some other ways to be healed.

Just recently, a series of unpleasant circumstances occurred again. A déjà vu of what had happened in the past.

I was attending the Christian Life Program of the Couples for Christ at the San Roque Church in Subic when I received text messages from my niece informing me her mother, my eldest sister, was rushed to the hospital.

Almost simultaneously with that, my nephew also called me up on my cell phone telling me his Daddy, my youngest brother, was in jail and asking me to call the City Mayor, a good friend of mine and a former classmate in the high school, and request him to do something for his Dad’s release.

Text messages from a nephew and a niece whom I both send to college found their way in my cell phone’s inbox telling me their final examinations were coming and payments were due.

At work, as reorganization was under way, some co-workers kept maligning my name and fed false information to the one in power and authority that had always been the reason why I was being asked to report to his office to explain.

As I have reached the deadline our landlady had set to vacate the room I was renting, as the third floor of the building where my room was located had to be renovated, conflict in my priorities started slowly taking shape.

All the above incidents explain my absence in blogosphere lately and why I had not been active updating my posts. But having grown older and wiser, I now know how to deal with such life situations. Like a stormy weather that will soon pass, I know life situations--sooner or later-- will surely get better. As the trauma had slowly faded away, like a silver lining after the storm, there is great hope I could really catch up on things I left unfinished.

Friends and readers, I missed you all an awful lot!

Curious....

Seems lately I've been getting a lot of hits on a very old blog topic of mine regarding Reagan walking for the first time..but that's not what the draw is. Apparently it's a picture of Reagan with bright red cheeks which was a reaction to some medication she had been taking at the time.

I'm wondering if people click on it thinking it's going to lead them to a picture of another type of red cheek (and if so, that's utterly disgusting and I'm considering going private).....or if it's more liberal nonsense making fun of President Reagan's red cheeks (poor taste, even for liberals, if I do say so myself)...which is what I got when I googled.

I think it goes without saying that you must have been doing something right if your presidency ended almost 20 years ago and you're still upsetting the liberals. Long live Conservative values: Christianity, morals, family values, protecting the innocent, less government, supporting the military, fending for yourself and believing in the Constitution.

Triple the Sketch & Pink Persimmon

Triple the Sketch is helping Pink Persimmon celebrate their first anniversary. They are giving away a $50 gift certificate to the Pink Persimmon Stamps store. To enter you have to make a layout, card, tag or altered item based on TTS Sketch 63 and use a stamp on it. For all the details see the post here.

For a circle journal I needed to complete a 2 page layout on one of my favorite places to see God's handiwork. I chose our favorite vacation spot in Ely, MN.

I stamped a bracket onto pink cardstock, cut it out and embellished the dots with stickles. I used a stitch stamp to add stitching to the edges of my green cardstock background. I embellished the centers of the flowers with stickles. I drew stitching along the edges of my patterned paper with my favorite Zig pen.

Journaling says:
Left side: "...stand still and consider the wondrous works of God." Job 37:14

Right side: I love to see God's handiwork in the great outdoors. No where is it more evident than in the beauty of our favorite vacation spot in Ely, MN. We've seen elk, moose, loons, and bald eagles feeding their young. Jobs & stress seem far away in this setting.

A New Freezer, and What's in Your Fridge?

We bought a freezer on Thursday night. Yup, major purchase. I've been wanting one for a few months now, particularly since I've gotten more into couponing and cooking. Oftentimes I have to pass up deals at the store because I just don't have the freezer room at home (Dreyer's ice cream was on sale for $2.37 at Kroger!) or I have to forgo cooking a big batch of something because I don't have the space to store it.

Now, I know what you're thinking. Spending a bunch of money on a freezer in order to save a few dollars at the store doesn't make sense. Yes, you're right. It will take me quite awhile to recoup the money we spent on the freezer. But we will recoup it. I'll be able to buy fresh berries in bulk when they are in season and freeze them instead of spending an arm and a leg on them in the winter. I'll be able to buy chicken when it's on sale at $1.99 or less per pound and not have to give in and buy it at $2.99 or more. I can make more pizza dough, pasta sauce, and casseroles, and ultimately have to cook less. That's appealing.

And I must admit that one of the reasons that I wanted a freezer is organization. I really like things to be organized, and my freezer right now is anything but. Yes, I try to keep veggies on one shelf and fruits on another, but in the end stuff just gets shoved in wherever it will fit. And more times than not, something falls on your foot when you open the door.

The new freezer is a Kenmore Elite-- 20.6 cubic feet, upright, Energy Star, self-defrosting, with multi-port air baffles, a door lock, an electronic display and temperature sensors. It holds up to 711 pounds of food. Whoa. (Yes, we got it on a good 20% off sale.) It will be delivered Monday, and I can't wait to fill it up. :)

*****
I think it's very insightful to look inside someone's fridge. And since I've been writing about refrigeration, I thought I'd give you a peek at some of the things that you can always find inside our fridge. (Bear with me on the photos, as they are not MckMama quality! I took them a bit too hastily.)

On the top shelf, we always have at least 3 gallons of milk. Isaac drinks whole milk (as all kiddos should until they are 2), Caleb drinks 1%, and Scott and I drink skim.

We always have at least two large containers of yogurt in our fridge. I buy the organic whole milk kind for Isaac (he eats some every day), and the organic low-fat or non-fat vanilla kind for Caleb and me. I keep some little containers of flavored yogurt for Scott.

I would not like to live life without coffee. And we buy Yuban when it's on a good sale. It's bold and flavorful, and it's certified by the Rainforest Alliance. It would be much better for the environment and those who work in coffee fields to buy organic, fair-trade coffee, but I just can't afford it. If you know of an affordable one, let me know!

Ezekiel 4:9 are our favorite tortillas. In case you don't know the Biblical reference, here's the verse: "Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself." Well, the people at Food for Life who make these tortillas (and the other Ezekiel products) took these words seriously. They are made from sprouted grains, which are more nutrient-dense than flour. The tortillas are actually a complete protein. Interesting stuff, and scrumptious, too!

Hummus. Yummus. Scott actually won't eat it, which is a shame. And technically I'm not supposed to let Isaac have it, either, since it's made from sesame seeds. But...he has it now and then, with no signs of allergies. ;) I like hummus on carrots, celery, red pepper, and bread.

Now this is a really bad picture, but here is the applesauce section of our fridge. We always have some plain organic applesauce, which I use for baking (any time a recipe calls for oil, I nix it and use applesauce instead). I keep some sort of flavored organic applesauce as well (this one is blackberry applesauce), and I add it to Isaac's cereal (typically either rice, oatmeal, quinoa, or barley) in the mornings.

I also add a little of this to Isaac's cereal and to my own oatmeal in the mornings. It's ground flax meal. I buy flax seeds in bulk, and about every 3 weeks I'll grind up a few cups. Ground flax meal is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, especially for those of us who don't eat enough fish. It also has tons of fiber and other great nutrients. I have about 2 tablespoons each day, and Isaac has about 1 teaspoon.

Wheat germ goes in Isaac's oatmeal and mine, too. It, like flax meal, is actually very good tasting, even though it sounds strange.

I am not a big fan of juice (nutritionally speaking), but Caleb doesn't like plain water. So we mix about 2 ounces of juice with 8 ounces of water to dilute it. Caleb doesn't know the difference. He will only drink white grape or apple, though I'm trying to get him to branch out.

And last but not least, I keep my whole wheat flour in the fridge. Wheat flour goes rancid faster than normal flour, so it's best to keep it in the fridge. I use whole wheat flour in cookies, breads, pizza dough, cobblers--pretty much anything I bake. Using it in place of all-purpose "enriched" white flour is an easy substitute that greatly boosts the nutritional value of your foods.

Now it's your turn. Leave me a comment or make your own blog post about what's in YOUR fridge!

Old Friend(s)

and boy do I have some "old friends." ;) One of my dearest friends just had a birthday last week. I have known her for 44 years (ever since she was born). Love ya girlie! Now on with the show.

This card has a really masculine feel to it, I don't really have any "old" male friends except for the ones I inherited 23 years ago when DH and I got married! Don't really think any one of them would appreciate the time I put into this card though.

This card was created for the Potluck Friday challenge at Stamp TV. It was really pretty simple to put together. Here are the deets:

1. Fold Chocolate Kiss cardstock in half and run through the Cuttlebug with largest Petite Oval Scallop Nestie.

2. Print Moss Burlap digi paper from freebies section at Stamp TV.

3. Run digi paper through CB with largest die from the small Petite Ovals set.

4. Color pine tree stamp (GKD) with Tombow markers (098,126, 451 & 969)

5. Spritz stamp with fine mist of water and stamp onto Arches 140# coldpress watercolor paper.(Canson 140# coldpress will work good too)

6. Ink sentiment first with Adirondack Espresso ink and then lightly touch to Adirondack Ginger ink to add a bit of red to the espresso (this combo matches Tombow 969 perfectly), stamp onto image panel.

7. Affix tree panel to digi panel and punch holes on either side for your ribbon.

8,,Insert ribbon, tie in knot and affix to Chocolate Kiss card with foam tape.

9. Add a little glitter to the tree and a stick pin to the knot.

Voila!

If you would like to receive this card in your mailbox, leave me a comment and I will draw a winner tomorrow night. Be sure I have your e-mail addy or some way to reach you.

Happy Saturday night!

Is this heaven?

Just got over a summer cold. I haven't had a cold in the summer in a LOOOONG time. It's just as "unfun" in the summer as it is in the winter. ;)
Then this week not one...but both our cars broke down and are in the shop! Don't know where the money is going to come from for those problems. We also had to rent a car. What a bummer. However, I do have to say I like driving this little rental Nissan instead of my usual Eurovan. I feel like I've lost 200 lbs. lol!

Now we are heading to Iowa...

John Kinsella: Is this heaven?
Ray Kinsella: It’s Iowa.
John Kinsella: Iowa? I could have sworn this was heaven.
Ray Kinsella: Is there a heaven?
John Kinsella: Oh yeah. It’s the place where dreams come true.
Ray Kinsella: Maybe this is heaven

My hubby quickly made this pic yesterday night. I think it's cute.

Our Busy Week...and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISH!

I've been in a writing rutt lately, which is weird because we've been so busy - I have things to write about.

Monday and Tuesday this week were very very warm. With humidity, temperatures were in the 100's. Adam had filled the swimming pool up for us Monday morning and by the time we got home to swim in it, the water was too warm for the girls. They wouldn't even get in. I had to add some more cold water which made it very luke warm. We sat in the sun and enjoyed splashing each other with the water. Alexa loves her pool and will even put her face under the water, but Lillian is a little bit more reserved. She likes to sit on my lap and watch Alexa slide down the slide, splash and play. I find this odd, because Lillian is my little daredevil. She is usually up for anything. Maybe it's just a phase?

Tuesday was library day, our second trip to the library in Farmington, and most likely our last. Things went well for the first few mins. We returned our books we checked out from last week, gave the librarian a piece of mail with my name and new address on it, to prove we live where we live so I can check out more than 2 books on my library card and then proceeded to the back corner of the library - the children's section. Alexa and Lillian immediately went to the shelves and started pulling all the books they could grab and handed them to me. Within a minute I was holding a towering heap of books they wanted to check out. I tried to explain to Alexa that she should look at the books and search for ones that look interesting to her, not just grab whatever she can reach off the shelf. Don't get me wrong, I like to read fun books, but I try to get ones that have some sort of meaning or lesson that relates to Alexa or Lillian. For example, sleeping in their own bed, potty training, manners..ect. But, this time I had no choice, they had picked the ones they wanted and had moved on to the toys in the corner. They had a toy mailbox with little pieces of paper cut to look like letters to fit through the mail slot. Lillian sat and put letters through the slot while I sat and read a book to Alexa. But, when I was finished Alexa decided it was her turn to put the letters through the slot and well, let's just say Lillian wasn't very willing to give up her turn. We are in a library remember, so Lillian's screams just echoed throughout the building. Enough to make the 9 year old volunteer come over to try helping me distract her with a puzzle, that she was clearly not interested in. Instead, she went into hyper mode and started running up and down the book aisles pulling books off the shelves and throwing them on the floor. I chased after her trying to put the books back in their correct placing on the shelf. What a circus. When I finally thought I had things cleaned up enough, I grabbed the kids to get the heck out of there. We went up to the front to check out, swiped my card in the self check out and BEEP BEEP BEEP. The screen read "There is an error on your card, please see librarian for assistance". Oh brother, what could this be? I had Lillian squirming in my arms wanting to get down and run, but I wasn't up for cleaning up her mess, so I held on to her tightly while I'm asking the librarian what is up with my card. She proceeded to tell me that I had a $10.42 balance on my card from like 2 years ago. I couldn't check out any books until I paid it with either cash up front or credit online. Well, being I never carry cash, I had to pay online with my check card, which was out in my car. Lillian is still squirming like crazy and I'm still holding on tight as we make our way through the parking lot to the car. While I'm digging through my purse, Lillian screams at me, "AHhhhh"! Frustrated, I tapped her mouth with my hand, scolding her not to do that any more and what do you know it makes her laugh and she now thinks it's a "game". So every 5 seconds she lets out a little, but loud, scream. Not wanting her to continue, I nicely ask her to stop and then scold Alexa for laughing at her. She carries on with her little "game" back into the library. The librarian sets me up with a computer to pay for my overdue charges online and Lillian keeps screaming in her ear. I keep apologizing, but the VERY understand librarian starts to get the giggles, which just fuels Lillian to scream even more, and LOUDER! I look up from the computer screen and there are at least 7 people across the room (with headphones on) using the computers, all turned around staring at Lillian, giving her very mean and evil looks. I don't blame them, mind you, but she is a little kid, SORRY!
So, finally the nice little 9 year old volunteer came to my rescue again and took the girls and gave them each a "stamp" on their hand while I was able to finish paying my overdue fines online and checked out the books. All was fine and good when we got to the car, but boy, I can just see the look of horror on the librarians face when we walk in next week to return our books.

Wednesday night was the start of the concerts in the park in Burnsville. Even though we are little bit further away now, the girls still enjoy going, and quite frankly, I do, too. We packed our bag with a blanket, snacks (popcorn and craisens) and food shelf items. If we bring food shelf items they trade us for a can or pop or a bottle of water. So, we each got a water. The band was "Bob and the Beachcombers". It really was a huge beach party. They had a million lei's scattered all over the front of the stage for you to put on when you arrived, as well and a gazillion hula hoops for the kids to play with. I found a spot near the front, because Alexa LOVES to dance near the front of the stage, so I like to stay as close as I can. Alexa immediately got us each a lei and grabbed a large green hula hoop and began to move her little hips. I was amazed at how well she did. She said she had been practicing at school. One of the older kids was trying to teach her. Lillian again was a little more reserved. She wanted to sit on my lap and just watch everyone. She did, however, get a little more active towards the end of the show and danced with me for a little bit. The band was amazing, Alexa got her face painted and the girls were shot by the time we got home. I gave them a quick rinse and they were ready for bed.

Last night (Thursday) Adam worked late as part of his extended summer hours, so I decided to take the girls to the sprinkler park in Apple Valley. Lillian was very excited to see all the kids and the water spraying out of the ground, but wanted to stay close by me. Alexa on the other hand, was all over the place. I lost her at one point at the playground. I nicely reminded her to tell me when she was leaving the water park. Her newfound "independence" scares me. After they played at the water park for awhile, I allowed them some time at the playground, too, before heading home. They were both very good listeners. I gave them tubs again when we got home and they were both sleeping by 9:15, which is actually pretty good considering it's been much later than that most of the summer, so far.

We are anxious for another busy night tonight, with a playdate with Alexa's old friends from her very first childcare - New Horizon. We've stayed in touch with 3 other families from her classroom over the years and have planned a big get together for tonight. We've gotten together with one of the girls (Katelyn) a few times since, but it's been awhile since she's seen the other 2 (Connor and Nathanial), so I'm anxious to see if they'll recognize each other. We're meeting at Carrie and Matt's for pizza and then play at the park afterwards - which just so happens to be the park by our old townhouse. So, our kids are very familiar.

We have a babysitter lined up for Saturday night to watch the girls while we have dinner at our friend's Vic and Sara's and then we'll try and get to the Dew Days parade in Farmington on Sunday.

Adam's parks are closed next week, so we also look forward to having him home with us in the evenings next week. Nevertheless, we'll still be very busy. A grill out with our friends Renee and Sandiq and their kids Jayita and Nadia and also a playdate with our friend Sarah and her 2 kids, Chase and Owen are in the works for next week. Then it's the big 4th of July weekend, where we will head to Albert Lea to welcome Adam's mom back from England and to hit up the HUGE 4th of July parade and fireworks show.

A VERY SPECIAL HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MOM AND BROTHER BENSKI THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 28TH! I HOPE YOU BOTH HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!! HUGS AND KISSES

#65) Gooey Pecan Cake

This cake was made because my two besties are coming for supper today - my maid of honour and a high school friend, who is her bf :) Although we are all looking forward to the BBQ, this dessert will be the highlight of the meal, I think. The chocolate cake is spiced up with some cinnamon, and the pecan topping is gooey and sweet enough to cut the cinnamony taste. Looking forward to sharing this one!!!

Pecan Topping

Ingredients

3 tbsp butter (not margarine)
3 tbsp margarine
1 cup packed brown sugar
3 tbsp water
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 cup pecan halves

Steps

-Melt butter and margarine in a medium saucepan.
-Add brown sugar and water. Bring to a boil and keep boiling for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mixture will be smooth.
-Add chopped pecans to mixture. Add remaining pecans. Set aside.

Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
3 eggs
1 1/4 cups flour
3/4 cup cocoa
1 tsp cinnamon
3/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup sour cream

Steps

-Grease a 10-inch springform pan. To prevent leakage wrap the outside of the pan with aluminum foil. (I had some issues with leakage, so I would caution you to place to pan on a foil-lined cookie sheet before putting it in the oven. There is nothing worse than burnt sugar in the bottom of the oven!)

-Place a tine can filled with dried beans in the centre. I also lined this with foil and sprayed it.

-Preheat oven to 350°F.

-Beat butter with sugar and vanilla.

-Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition.

-Combine dry ingredients. Add to egg mixture alternately with sour cream (3 additions dry, 2 additions sour cream).

-Add pecan topping to bottom of greased pan. Pour batter over top and spread out.

-Bake for 50 - 60 minutes. Let cool in pan for 30 minutes. Turn out onto cake pan, replacing any nuts stuck to the pan.

Awake My Soul

Awake My Soul

Awake my soul from its slumber
Step out and great the day
With all its stories yet untold
Join in; is what I say
Stand back and be the casual observer
Or step in and join the play
Your piece is needed in this puzzle
Connecting others come what may

The actors all , they fill the stage
Each performing their own part
Each thought and movement braids the air
Such wondrous glorious art
Awake your soul and fill your space
Let Life’s story fill your heart
Your gifts are needed here and now
To fill Life’s Abundant Cart

I'm Tigger!

Yesterday Reagan was sitting in bed coloring with her markers while I tried to get some more sleep...I looked up to find her coloring stripes on her face...I didn't have the strength to tell her no..so I just let her go! She proceeded to color her face, her arms and her legs and then said "Mommy! I'm Tigger!"

Lessons from a Broken hand....

We've all had one of those days where you just think you should be somewhere else, farther along, etc...
Well this morning was one of "those" days for me... only to be turned around by my hand therapist..... (My injury is healing in its time; not mine, and frustrating more than anything.)
I count my blessings every day, and Pray and send Healing to those less fortunate... here's my turn around day....

Lessons From A Broken Hand
I had a bout of energy
To get out side and walk
I took the dogs and off I went
To walk my very talk
Got'em ready and “We’re off!”
For me the race did start
Walking fast for this ol’ broad
Happy dogs were walking smart
Walking by I say “Hello!”
To an old neighbor gent
Heard a noise and turned my head
Mistake!! as down I went
A crunch and splat is what I heard
Oh my, what did I do?
I turn on over and then look up
8 paws, 4 eyes say “just look at you”
I sat on up and looked around
To hear, “why miss are you all right?”
I lied to him and said “why yes”
As if I did this every night
It was 2:30 on march 15th
The day of my swan dive
A day I still remember
As to make a fist I strive
10 weeks in a cast and now PT
I work out every day
This morning she asked me how I was
“Very sore” I said with dismay
“I’m NOT where I want to be
And it just hurts. What can I do?”
She looked at me and then she said
“It takes time , I’ll work with you”

“Look not where you think you should be
But rather, how far you’ve come”
Deep down I think I knew this
But today I was just that dumb
An easy road’s not promised
It may take a horse and plough
The joy is in the journey
Is what I remember now
But every step is worth it
As we reach for rainbow skies
A changing of perspective
Turns doubts and fears to lies
From where I was to where I am
I’ve come leaps and bounds
I just needed a reminder
Lift my head and look around
I now can use 2 hands to type
And can even tie my shoe
For these little mountains I climb
I Thank God that I can do
The healing is in my mind
As much as in my hand
For I needed that reminder
I’ve come far despite the sand
Try walking up a mountain
Sifting sand under your feet
Each step ahead slides back a bit
Yet a forward motion you keep
I thank my therapist today
My catalyst in rhyme
With Faith we can move mountains
One fistful at a time

Sooo sick.

I have strep throat :( and I can't even speak. Luckily Reagan has been such a great kid and has obeyed my hand gestures, even going down for a nap when i picked her up and put her in bed. Meanwhile, I'm in so much pain I can't stand it and Tylenol ISN"T helping!!! I've already managed to down one chocolate shake and I just don't think I can face another--it makes me sick but it *does* feel really great on my throat. I've lost three pounds in two days and did I mention our Open House is this weekend?

Yep, somehow I manage to get sick at the worst times.

Making Walgreens Work for You

I got a comment from my friend Kristen on a previous post asking about Walgreens' Register Rewards. I started to answer her in an email, but I thought my answer might benefit others, too, so I'm posting it here. Here's the original comment:

Hey, so I got my first set of Register Rewards at Walgreens, and I'm confused about something. If I apply the RR to my current purchase (for example, a St. Ives body wash for 2.99, get a 2.99 RR = FREE), then I can't also then apply that FREE-ness to the item I bought later with my RR (toilet paper, for example).

Most of the websites consider the item producing the RR for free, but then they also talk about how they got free stuff *with* their RRs.

They can't *both* be considered free. Does that make sense?

What she's referring to is the blogs like Money Saving Mom and Southern Savers that put together a list each week of all the "free" stuff and deals you can get at Walgreens and other stores. Walgreens often has specials where you buy an item at x price and get x dollars in Register Rewards, which means that the item is basically free. But my friend is exactly right--you can’t really get the item for free unless you already have a RR in your hand.

What ends up happening is that the first time you go to Walgreens, you spend real money. I spent something like $50 the first time I went to Walgreens and got lots of stuff, but I messed up on some purchases. (Read that post to see what I did wrong--hopefully it will keep you from making the same mistakes!) I did end up getting about $25 back, which I was able to use on subsequent visits.

The way to “work” Walgreens is to use those RRs to buy stuff that produces more RRs. That way you rarely pay any real money. For example, here's an ideal situation:

Today you go to Walgreens and get item A for $3 with a $3 reward and item B for $5 with a $5 reward. You spend $8 in real money (plus tax!), but you get $8 in RRs back. Total spent: $8 out-of-pocket (OOP).

Next week you go to Walgreens and get items C and D that are $4 each and produce two $4 RRs. You use your $8 in RRs from the previous week, and get an additional $8 in RRs. Woo hoo! Now you're in business! Total spent: $0 (or just the tax on the items, if applicable), plus $8 in RR to use on your next purchase!

Of course, that's an ideal world. Usually what ends up happening to me is that I have a $3 RR and a $5 RR, and the only thing I want to buy in the store is a $4 item that produces a RR. In that situation, I can either use the $3 RR and pay $1 out of pocket, or I can find a "filler" item for a dollar or more, and use the $5 RR. I can't use a $5 RR to pay for a $4 item.

There are a few things you have to keep in mind when "working Walgreens":

  • You can stretch those RRs even farther by using store and manufacturer coupons. For instance, if I want to buy some M&Ms for $2 that produce a $2 RR, I can also use a coupon forM&Ms and turn it into a money-maker.
  • You can't have more coupons than you have items. If you have a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon for one item, you have to find another "filler" item to purchase so that you have 2 coupons and 2 items. RRs are considered coupons.
  • Try to only buy things that produce RRs, and stockpile them! When there is a really good deal on something, I hit one or more Walgreens throughout the week and stock up.
  • You can't use a RR to produce the same RR. For example, if you buy those M&Ms and get the RR for it, you can't use that RR to buy another package of M&Ms. It won't print out a RR.
  • I've used expired RRs at two Walgreens and had no problems. So don't panic if your RRs are expiring! Wait for a good deal, or use them to buy a newspaper.
I have shopped at CVS a couple of times now, and I have to say that I like Walgreens better. Here's why:
  • At Walgreens, you don't have to use a shopper card that tracks your purchases. When there is a CVS deal on toothpaste that costs $2 and gives you a $2 reward, you can only get the deal once per shopper card. I like that with Walgreens, I can do as many transactions at as many sotres as I want and keep getting the same deal.
  • At least in my area, if I don't hit CVS on Sunday night, the deals are all gone. I have yet to get any good deals at any CVS around here because the shelves are scraped clean when I get there. At Walgreens, the good deals are usually still there on Tuesdays or even later in the week.
Anyway, back to Kristen's question, the first trip to Walgreens is really the most confusing. Once you get some RRs in your hand, you really CAN get stuff for free and shell out very little money. On my last trip I spent only $.26 and got some high priced items, plus more RRs back. But you don't really get anything for FREE until you use the RRs you have. If you get the RRs and then don't go back to Walgreens, you didn't get a good deal at all. Walgreens has these RR programs to keep you coming back in the store.

Whenever I tally up how much I spent at a store, I calculate how much was actually out of pocket, and I note how much I got back in rewards or gift cards that I can use next time.

I hope that helps a little. It definitely is a confusing thing to write about!

Jennaa finally has a new home!

It's been quiet a while since I did a week 2 week update. Ever since poor Jennaa was put into lock down. I have had such trouble with SL over the last few weeks but I think it's finally starting to settle down. After everything was sorted out with with the lindens, I downloaded the update and my word what a disaster! Let's just say I have gone back to my good old viewer and I seem to not be nearly having as much trouble thank goodness.

I have managed to catch up on alot of shopping, slowly catching up on the shows I missed and I got myself a new home! I am so in love with my new home and I don't think I have ever been this happy with my residence on SL. I had looked at Costa Rica Sims before, but thought I had better get a little more settled, then when my friend Imani showed me a plot that was available that was it... SOLD.

The Costa Rica Sims is a world within a virtual world, having been named one of the "25 Most Beautiful Places in Second Life®" by different publications and "Hot Spots" on Secondlife.com®. No other Estate in SL™ offers as many different environments and amenities as the Costa Rica Sims, allowing residents from over 40 different countries around the world to live in harmony with nature. All this in an Estate that has proven to be one of Second Life´s® success stories. (Taken from the website).

ANNOUNCING MISS BLISS COUTURE 2010!

I am entering this and thought I would share it with everyone or the one person who checks out my blog. (The below text is taken directly from the note card).

This is a multi-level competition based on photos, live modeling and objective judging. NO VOTES! The competition begins June 18th and we will accept entries till July 30th 2009.

Step 1 - Join "THE BEST OF SL Magazine Readers" Group. All notices and results will be announced in this group only.

Step 2 - Models will submit photos of themselves wearing a dress or outfit from Bliss Couture. One full body and one headshot 512 X 512 (FULL PERM) each. Full body photos will be judged on styling, while headshots will judged based on visual appeal of the model. Please send your entry in a folder (not a notecard) to Caymon Zhora. Label your entry MISS BLISS COUTURE 2010 (YOUR NAME).

Step 3 - 100 girls will be selected from these entries for a live audition callback. Models should again wear a Bliss Couture dress or outfit and style themselves in a way they believe represents the image of Bliss Couture. Live audition will include a runway walk and will take place over 2 live audition times so all girls will have a chance to be seen.

Step 4 - Pool will be narrowed down to 20 models from the live audition. Since the winner of the competition will be working closely with designer Amutey DeCuir, it is important that the girl herself show signs of reliability and be personable. An interview will be scheduled for each girl to gauge for compatibility between model and designer.

Step 5 - The pool of 20 will be narrowed down to 10. The 10 finalists will all have a photoshoot done wearing the same dress provided to them by Bliss Couture. These side by side photos by a professional photographer will be judged by a panel and will determine the top 5.

Step 6 - The top 5 will all be invited to be Bliss Couture Models, on staff for live modeling, runway modeling, special events and select vendor ads. The 5 finalists will walk in a runway show, wearing all new releases from Bliss Couture. A panel of judges will be present to determine the winner.

Step 7 - From the top 5, ONE lady will be chosen as Miss Bliss Couture 2010. Miss Bliss will be considered the "Face" of Bliss Couture, appearing in most vendor ads for new clothing, and will exclusively be the model in all print advertising for magazines and other media. Miss Bliss Couture will be given priority for all modeling jobs available, only being replaced in the event of her being unavailable.

PRIZES!

The top 10 finalists will receive a professional photoshoot, and their choice of any one fatpack of a Bliss Couture dress or outfit.

The top 5 finalists will all become Bliss Couture models, and be hired for various modeling work within the company. In addition to the prizes for the top 10, the top 5 girls will also each receive a $5000L gift card to Bliss Couture.

Miss Bliss Couture will be awarded a specially designed diamond jewelry set from Alyssa Bijoux . She will also be given all future Bliss Couture releases throughout her reign (one year), 10,000L Cash Prize and of course the title of Miss Bliss 2010.

The winner will also receive an invitation to Boulevard Agency and an interview for BOSL Magazine.

Good Luck to all of you and we'll see you on the runway!

#64) German Chocolate Chewies

I know, I know... The topping on these suckers looks less than appetizing, BUT it sure does taste good!

These little things were made as a treat for a cousin of mind who has a sweet tooth just as big as mine :) They are quite similar to one of my favorite cakes, German Chocolate Cake, but the bite-sized version is even better. The brownie cookie is great on its own, with a chewy texture and chocolately flavour, but the gooey crunchy topping adds a great new twist!

Brownie Cookies

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2/3 cup shortening
1 tbsp water
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
1/3 cup cocoa
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
2 cups chocolate chips (I used semi-sweet and milk)

Steps

-Preheat oven to 375°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-Beat together brown sugar, shortening, water, and vanilla. Add eggs. Beat well.
-Combine flour, cocoa, salt, and baking soda. Add to shortening mixture. Stir in chocolate chips.
-Drop by rounded tablespoonful and bake for 7-9 minutes.
-Cool completely.

German Topping

Ingredients

1/2 cup evaporated milk
1/2 cup white sugar
1/8 cup shortening
1/8 cup butter
2 egg yolks
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup flaked coconut
1/2 cup chopped pecans

Steps

-Combine evaporated milk, sugar, shortening, butter, and egg yolks in a saucepan. Stir over medium heat until thickened.
-Remove from heat. Add vanilla, coconut, and pecans. Cool completely.
-Frost cookies.

*Makes 3 dozen cookies.

"Pretzels by the Dozen"

This is a great kid's book! I checked it out at the library the other day for Reagan and I to read and not only does it spell out the history of pretzels in a kid-friendly way, but it's also a great Christian book AND includes a wonderful recipe for pretzels to make with your kids.

Suprisingly, making pretzels is fairly easy! And the best part? The dough doesn't contain eggs so you don't have to constantly yell at your children to stop eating the dough!

I encourage moms and dads to run out and get this book..it'll provide some great one on one time with you and your little one.

Create Love

Thought for Today:
If I learn to create love in my heart and silently share it with everyone I meet, Love will grace every corner of my life.
From: http://www.thoughtfortoday.org.uk/

How true is this. If we can only find it in ourselves to Love ourselves, Love life, Love each other,….just Love. Let it fill every part of you, show Love, be Love….

Remember the feeling of being on cloud 9? Maybe it was a crush or first love… Maybe it was that gift you always wanted…Maybe it was going on that vacation of a lifetime… Your first pet…. Basking in the Light under the cool shade of a tree watching clouds go by…. We’ve all felt it at least once, that unstoppable excitement in the soul, that energy, that Love of/for life… Everything was possible… Nothing can stop us… It’s an amazing feeling!.. Whatever it was, remember how everything seemed right!?!

No one could take that feeling away from you. You walked a little higher, smiled a little broader, no one could break that inner “cloud 9” glow. You want to know something? It was contagious… That Love you had so great inside, exploded outside and no matter who or what you touched, it was affected by it!! That Light inside touched a spark in everyone and everything around you!

Love, is an inside job. True Love for Life, for Spirit, for God, Love for ourselves and another, it fills the soul and can’t be contained! It’s like trying to hide a powerful flashlight that’s turned on… you can’t. You can try putting your hand over the light to hide it’s glow; (We’ve tried this as children. If not, go try it now! Find a flashlight, turn off the lights and try to hide the glow with your hand..) The light is so powerful it shines through your hand, through you.

The Light glows through you and makes you glow too!! You’re alive with the Light; it’s changed and you can’t hide it. It glows!

If you are filled with Love, your inner Light shines, as a matter of fact…. It Glows! You can’t hide it, you can’t contain it. You can’t keep it to yourself, it’s impossible.

Have you ever sat next to a stranger yet feel the joy they bring? They don’t have to say one word, you just know and feel their glow. All the sudden you’re smiling, or laughing, or just feeling better for just having been near that person.

Create Love in your heart and silently share it with everyone!! Be “that” person, fill your heart and soul with the Light of Love. You will find that when people come up they’ll see and feel the Love and Joy, the Positive Energy around you, and smile. Watch as they walk by,.. their step is a little lighter, their face a little less stressed… God works in wondrous ways! The power of Love is unstoppable, it will grace every corner of your life.

May you be filled with Love and may you glow with inner Light that shines today and always filling every corner of your life.

Thank you all for sharing your glow, your Light, your Love with me and making my day a little brighter, my step a little quicker, my smile a little broader… You are truly a gift to me and others.
Love and Light, Nina P
