"Mothering Instincts" Week Begins!

Shabby Chic Torso

Hi Everyone~

Welcome to “Mothering Instincts” Week here at Whimsical Musings. I’d like to start by showing you my latest project--this “Shabby Chic Torso” now available in my Etsy shop. I have used curly seam binding ribbon to adorn this piece.

Up Close

I had no idea that it would take 10 hours to create! But, it is a real favorite of mine and I thought it would make a memorable gift for Mother’s Day.

As many of you know, I design for Shabby Cottage Studio and the torso is from their wonderful online store! (The music note graphics are from The Graphics Fairy.)

I have some wonderful news~My Paris Collage has just been featured on The Graphics Fairy’s Craft Blog....I hope you’ll check it out ~and it’s a great place to visit for new ideas!

Paris Collage--Custom Order

And before you go, I want to ask you a question....What is your earliest memory of your mom? I’ll tell you mine. I was about 3 or 4 years old and my mom bought the Snow White Album from Disney. We listened to the story and read the accompanying book together. It was a really happy moment for me.

A Little Vintage Charm

Jackson Square/New Orleans

Last week, I went to visit the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans.

Jeanne d'Arc Necklace

While I was there, I bought a medallion of Jeanne d’Arc for my

special daughter-in-law, Nikki and created this necklace for her

with a key, a crown, and gear for her birthday.

"Charmed" Wall Hanging

Then, I created this wall hanging for her. It includes one of my

favorite images from Shabby Cottage Studio. I couldn’t wait to

make a collage using this vintage blue necklace. It is being entered

in the Spot Prize challenge at Dezinaworld where the theme is

“Charming.”

Sugar-Sweet Lollipops

Then, I made these for my grandchildren to accompany

the other gifts. Of course, the sugar is actually white glitter!

The heart images are from Shabby Cottage Studio too!

They're fun to make--Honestly, I don't know how the idea

popped into my head--but I think they'd also be cute to

stick inside a planter in the house.

While at the cathedral last week, I prayed for all of my family

and friends--and that includes all of you that I have

met while blogging.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend~A Happy Pink Saturday!

and a Spiritual Sunday!!!

Is the animal (fur) out of the closet?

Cindy Crawford in fur on the cover of Russian Vogue

This morning, whilst waiting for my boss to open the office, I indulged in one of my favourite pass times - vintage window shopping. I say window shopping because if I enter this particular op shop, I know I will leave a good deal of money there. As it is, there is an adorable pair of 50s style heels with a matching handbag that are singing a siren song to my purse. I really need to start leaving my cash at home (and freezing my credit card in a bucket of water, but that's another story).

Anyhoo, on this particular morning, as I was admiring said shoes and bag, something else caught my eye - a vintage fur jacket and matching hat. I was instantly confronted - fur?! I went through the usual 'is it real? No, it can't be - hang on - no! But yes, I think it is! Can it be?' And so then came the question: Is fur accepatable because it's vintage?

Recently, fur has been trying to make a comeback. In 2007, Cindy Crawford angered a lot of people by posing on the cover of Russian Vogue in a fur jacket, and, before that, agreeing to be the spokesperson for Blackglama, a range of mink clothing. Bold move, though not one to make you popular with the masses.

Now, I will state it up front: I do not like fur. I don't believe in killing animals in order to make yourself look good. But wait, doesn't that make me a hypocrite? I feel a bit like a hypocrite! I have leather shoes. And we stock upcycled leather handbags in our store.

It's a fact that I still don't know exactly how I feel about leather, given that I eat meat (insert 'we may as well use the whole animal' argument here). But I always felt that since the bags in my store were made from upcycled leather, it was ok. We were simply taking a hideous 80s style jacket that no-one wanted (and that would otherwise sit in an op shop, collecting dust) and turning it into something useful and beautiful. But hang on! you may say. By that reasoning, shouldn't it be ok to do the same thing with fur? Or is fur different, because it is often taken from endangered animals, rather than animals that are destined to die anyway in order to feed us?

OoOo, the ethical fashion field is just pitted with mines! Let's go peeps - What are your views on the subject? I'd love to hear your comments! And while you're at it, don't forget to vote in our pole (located just to the left) and tell us what eco-attribute is most important to you.

For my part, I think I'll leave the vintage fur to collect dust in the op shop, thank you very much.

Garage Sale Finds Yahoo..

I love going to a good garage sale. I'm just not a good "garage sale goer". I'm always on the look out for the bathroom. Funny huh? I live so far from town that it's almost like the minute I hit the car I'm looking lol.. But yesterday I had to go to a fellow FreeCyclers home to pick up some packing peanuts, we use them for shipping out eggs to our customers. When I got there I was in crafter's heaven. I couldn't afford much but I did spend $7.75 and love everything. I might go back tomorrow to see if she has anything left I can get for half off? Here are a couple of pics of what I found.

I am fairly certain that some of the items I got where old old old. I found a lot of Invisible eyes and hooks that ranged from .05 cents to .35 cents. This was such a blast. There is another big one today that I might try and sneak too, but alas I'll have to wait until I finish the menu for the week and the grocery budget.

Wishing you all abundant blessings,
