If you would have told me that my daughter would read at age 3, I would have told you you're crazy!! And that's exactly what I said to Alexa's preschool teachers at All Stars Montessori when she came home reading - and actually reading the words, not just looking at the pictures. Call me old fashion, but I totally thought reading was taught in kindergarten and first grade - not Pre-K. I just had to know their trick - how were they getting my little girl to read? The answer - BOB Books! I absolutley fell in love with these books when they started sending them home with Alexa. She would keep the book until she was confident in reading the whole thing, then bring it back to school to pick out another one. We were finding that before long she was able to read the whole book with confidence in one day. Seeing how proud she was of herself being able to read a book and know the words was what made me fall in love with BOB Books. She gained confidence in reading and developed an absolute love to read. With the different sets she was able to continue reading and fully challenge herself.
I was excited or the opportunity to review BOB Books because I truly believe they were a huge part in making my daughter learn and love to read. I received sets 1 and 2, which are beginning to read level. Alexa is beyond these levels now, but they are great refreshers for her and will be fantastic for Lillian when she begins the reading process.
About BOB Books:
Bob Books came about as a result of teacher Bobby Lynn Maslen’s careful attention to the specific needs of children learning to read for the very first time.
As a teacher at the Catlin Gabel School in Portland, Oregon, Bobby’s work with 3 to 5 year-olds involved constant invention in art, math games, physical growth activities and, of course, reading materials. When she didn’t find books that she felt were interesting enough for her young students, she created the Bob Books.
How BOB Books work:
The Bob Books Foundation Sets are for children who are ready to take the first steps into reading
Bob Books Set 1 • Beginning Readers. is very simple. With only four letters in the first book, your child can sound out all the words, and read the whole book. Children are so excited with their success, they want to try more. With each book read, their confidence and desire to learn grows.
Bob Books Set 2, Set 3, Set 4 and Set 5 build on each other, with enough repetition so reading becomes comfortable and easy, and new material so the child stays interested. Numbering the books and boxes creates a sense of progress and accomplishment. The books themselves are sized perfectly for little hands. Children love the hilarious (and sometimes mischievous) stories and pictures.
If your youngster is not ready for reading, My First Bob Books build pre-reading skills. My First Bob Books • Alphabet builds something called phonemic awareness - the ability to hear and separate sounds - and tunes your child's ear to the sounds letters make. My First Bob Books • Pre-Reading Skills introduces shapes and patterns to build awareness of letter groups. This foundation sets the stage for the magical moment when reading begins.
I would recomend BOB Books to any parent that is actively involved in getting their child to read before kindergarten and Preschool & Kindergarten teachers. These books are fabulous - my girls love to read them and my husband and I love that they enjoy them so much.
