Sue Ellen's GIrl Ain't Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson - Book Blog Tour Stop!

I am tickled pink to be hosting a book blog tour stop for author Shellie Rushing Tomlinson, and her new book, "Sue Ellen's Girl Ain't Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy."

 About The Book:

Shelly Rushing Tomlinson, the bestselling author of "Suck Your Stomach In & Put Some Color On!" returns with more helpful how-to's and keen observations from Dixie in her new book, "Sue Ellen's Girl Aint Fait, She Just Weighs Heavy."

Guided by principles from the ancient Belle Doctrine, the host of radio and television's "All Things Southern" offers down-home advice on everything from health and fitness-managing thy caloric calculations without going Straight Running Crazy and surviving the Raging Inferno Syndrome (aka hot flashes)-to the Southern art of handling your man (Bubba Whispering).

Whether giving business tips or debunking the Big Boned Theory, making political observations or celebrating the inevitable resurgence of big hair, Shellie is an adviser women can relate to and laugh with regardless of their age or which side of the Mason-Dixon they call home.

If you want a book that will leave you weak from laughing, and one that will have you nodding your head saying "Uh huh" in agreement, Shellie's book is the book for you!

Part advice book, part cookbook (oh the recipes!!!) and all one-hundred percent pure entertainment, "Sue Ellen's Girl Ain't Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy" is just an absolute joy to read. In this volume of what I hope will be an on-going series, Shellie gives her opinion and advice on menopause, social medias, manners, even a political thought or two. At the end of each chapter, she includes some of the most lip-smacking, soul-comforting, deeee-lish-ious sounding Southern recipes that I've encountered in a good long while - they sound so good, they'll make you want to slap your momma!  (It's a Southern saying, ya'll - we really don't slap our  mommas down here!)

So pull up a rocking chair on Shellie's front porch and sit a'spell to visit with one of the funniest ladies of Southern humor since Miss Fannie Flagg!  You will be smiling the whole time, I guarantee it!

Southern Plate: Classic Comfort Food That Makes Everyone Feel Like Family by Christy Jordan

It's wintertime, and nothing says lovin' like some warm and familiar comfort food.

And if comfort food and good, old-fashioned Southern favorites are what you’re looking for, Christy Jordan’s new cookbook, “Southern Plate: Classic Comfort Food That Makes Everyone Feel Like Family” is just the ticket!

Recipes for staples of southern cooking, such as macaroni and cheese, fried apples, fried chicken, sweet potato casserole, and much, much more can be find in this delightful book along with Jordan’s stories of family, friends, and good cooking.

The photographs in this cookbook are absolutely amazing. Photographer Jennifer Davick captures the down-home feel to Jordan’s recipes in photos of a batch of yummy deviled eggs sitting prettily on a glass egg tray, banana pudding spilling over the sides of bowls that look as if they are straight from Grandma’s house, and a table full of candied apples that look as if they could leap off the page.

As a long-time fan of Southern cooking, I found Jordan’s cookbook to be one of the most complete collections of old-time favorites that I have run across in a long time. I nearly wept with joy to find a recipe for Fruit Cocktail cake just like my mother-in-law makes, and the chocolate gravy my husband’s grandmother would fix just for special visits.

Jordan also shares her family's stories that accompany the recipes and are so warm and loving that you almost feel like part of the family after reading them.

You certainly don’t have to be a Southerner to appreciate the fine recipes found in “Southern Plate,” but once you’ve experienced it, you’ll never go back to plain ol’ cooking again!

Check out Christy Jordan's incredible website at http://www.southernplate.com/ for more wonderful recipes and to get to know this sassy Southern gal!

(After surfing her website, reading her book and watching her delightful videos, I feel like I've know Christy all my life!  But then again, that's how we Southern gals are! We love to connect over family, food and friendship!)

Here's a video of Christy talking about Southern cooking and why it means so much to her.

Pick out a favorite cookbook, pair it with a few kitchen accessories, and you’ll have a perfect holiday hostess gift or present that will provide pleasure long after the holidays are over.

Christy recently featured a wonderful idea for Christmas gifts on her blog - Hollie Jollies!  Chocolate covered delights that are sure to please anyone on your gift list this year!  Check out her website at http://www.southernplate.com/2009/12/holly-jollies-christmas-candy-on-a-budget-in-a-hurry.html for more info on how to make these lucious tidbits!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for review. I was not compensated for my opinions.

The 12 Days of Christmas Cookbook - kicking off 30 days of Holiday Reading!

Tonight, I kick off 30 days of holiday books to celebrate the Christmas season!
To kick off the holiday season, I’m so pleased to tell you about a fantastic cookbook titled “The 12 Days of Christmas Cookbook: The Ultimate in Effortless Holiday Entertaining”

Compiled by Marla Tipton, this hardback book contains many of the favorite holiday recipes that most of us “baby boomers” grew up!

This unique cookbook, created around the beloved classic Christmas carol—"Twelve-days-of-Christmas" features a dozen tantalizing chapters of scrumptious Christmas recipes. Fun categories include appetizers, breakfast dishes, candies, cookies, soups, breads, desserts, salads, beverages, side-dishes, main dish meals and even a section just for kids and their parents—"Eight Kids a-Cooking."

Each chapter includes entertainment suggestions and tips with thematic quotes and Scripture. The book begins with, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights." James
(NIV)

The titles of the chapters are so cute!

"On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me"

...An appetizer on a plate

...Two Beverages a-Blending

...Three Breads a-Rising

...Four Breakfast Dishes a-Baking

...Five candles

...Six Cookies a-Cooling

...Seven Deserts a-Delighting

...Eight Kids a-Cooking

...Nine Main Dishes a-Mixing

...Ten salads a-Crunching

...Eleven Sides a-Steaming

...Twelve Soups a-Simmering

If you are looking for a cookbook that is sure to become a family favorite, “The 12 Days of Christmas Cookbook” is one that I highly recommend!

Here is one recipe that I plan to incorporate into this year’s holiday feasting:

Candy Apple Salad

2 cups water
¼ cup red hot cinnamon candies
1 (3 ounce) package cherry flavored gelatin
½ cup chopped celery
1 ½ cups chopped Granny Smith apples
½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans

In saucepan, bring water to boil. Add cinnamon candies, stirring until dissolved. Remove from heat and add gelatin, stir until dissolved. Cool slightly, then refrigerate until gelatin begins to thicken. Add remaining ingredients, blend well. Pour into 8-inch square dish and chill until firm. Yield: 6 servings.

“The 12 Days of Christmas Cookbook, page 168.”

Thank you to Barbour Publishing for providing the review copy of this cookbook. I was not compensated for my opinion.

Yes, I'm a book addict! (or where oh where shall I put my cookbook collection?)

Hello, my name is Sharon and I’m a book addict.

Ok, there – I said it! I love books!

My addiction to books began when I was just a child. My mom and dad are to blame for my craving of anything bookish – you, see they were both book addicts too!

Growing up, we had books everywhere! Bookcases in the hall, in the den, in the bedrooms, in the living room, even in the dining room. We were a family of readers.

And when I had children, I turned them (well, most of them) into book addicts too! Four sons, all of them readers! I’m a proud momma!

(this is not one of mine...)

Which brings me to today’s blog. My husband (also a reader, don’t get me wrong!) thinks I have a problem. I have too many books.

Gasp….

I know, silly, huh?

But he loves me and he usually makes me bookshelves to organize my beloved books.

My current dilemma is trying to decide what kind of premade shelf unit that will fit in the dining room to house my collection of Southern Living Cookbooks.

I have been collecting the Southern Living cookbooks since I was a senior in high school (1979) and have all through 2006 (still looking for a few to catch me up to date.) I love these books for their beautiful photographs, their easy recipes, and their elegant look grouped together.

I like the look of a baker’s rack – and found some really cool ones at this website - http://www.diningroomsdirect.com/

See what you think of these!

I like this one, but it might be too small...
This one is GORGEOUS!

This one is cute, and would hold my collection well!

This one is elegant, and I love the bottom basket!

I’ll let you know what I decide to use.

Now, to find a place for all those books in the bathroom…..

Be sure to check out http://www.diningroomsdirect.com/ if you are looking for anything for your dining room. They have some beautiful things there!
