Day 3 of IRISH WEEK - The Book of Tomorrow by Cecelia Ahern

Today's selection is a look at modern-day Ireland that can be found in the young adult novel, “The Book of Tomorrow,” by Cecelia Ahern.

Ahern, who is the daughter of the former prime minister of Ireland, is well known for her sassy, brassy, chick-lit novels, and “The Book of Tomorrow” is no exception to the rule.

16-year old Tamara Goodwin is something of a spoilt child, seeing as she has always got everything she's ever wanted. Born into a family of wealth, she grew up in a huge, modern house with its own private beach, a wardrobe full of designer clothes and everything her heart could desire. She's always lived in the here and now, never giving a second thought to tomorrow.

But when her father suddenly dies, life for Tamara and her mother changes forever. Left with an overwhelming mountain of debt, they have no choice but to sell everything they own and move to the country to live with her mother’s brother and wife, a fate Tamara considers almost worst than death.

Almost.

Nestled next to the ancient, crumbling Kilsaney Castle, her uncle’s gatehouse is a world away from Tamara's normal world. With her mother shut away with grief, and her over-bearing aunt busy tending to her, Tamara is lonely and bored and longs to return to Dublin. When a traveling library passes by one afternoon, Tamara is intrigued. Her eyes rest on a mysterious large leather bound tome locked with a gold clasp and padlock. What she discovers within the pages takes her breath away and shakes her world to its core with its secrets and predictions of tomorrow.

Ahern brilliantly touches on a wide variety of subjects with “The Book of Tomorrow,” including grief, adapting, faith, family, and romance and, above all, wishing and believing in a better tomorrow. Although really geared towards an older teen/young adult audience, more mature readers will find Tamara’s story heart-wrenching and heartwarming as the young girl struggles to get a grip on the new life she has been presented with.
