Alexa goes to the Dentist

Since last spring, Alexa has been dreading her next dental visit.
She knew that it was going to be after the summer, the start of Kindergarten and her Birthday.
When her Birthday rolled around this year, she got especially nervous and dreadfully counted down the days.
We talked about it over and over, we read books, we talked her through all different kinds of scenarios and pumped up her bravery. We praised her and made her feel confident.
We had friends, neighbors, Grandma's, Grandpa's, aunt's, uncle's, babysitters, ect. tell her their 'positive' dentist stories.
We practiced at home, playing dentist...brushing, flossing, rinsing..ect.
So, it finally came. The long awaited day.
Tori came to babysit Lillian, I brushed and flossed Alexa's teeth.
She stayed strong.
She got quiet when we arrived in the waiting room, so I let her sit and cuddle on my lap.
(..and I may or may not have bribbed her with cute Halloween fake press on nails)
Her name was called and she tightly gripped my hand.
We walked back to the room together and she was told to jump up on the great big chair.
I could feel her body tense up, but she sat up in the chair. I was encouraging her and remaining positive..holding her hand and rubbing her legs (that were stiff as a board).
The hygenist gave her these cool sunglasses to wear to shield her eyes from the bright light.
Alexa thought that was pretty neat, but you can see by the look on her face, she is still very terrified.

While she is in a tense case of panic, I am snapping pictures of her...I'm so mean!
She did an amazing job getting her teeth counted, examined and cleaned. I was so proud of her.
She chose orange toothpaste and a yellow toothbrush.
She even did flouride!! Way to go Alexa!

I was very surprised at how well she did, considering her previous visits.
Read about her previous experiences here.
I'm thankful that she at least got through the cleaning and flouride!!
She decided not to do x-rays at this visit. Panic set in and she could not overcome it, but she agreed that she would for sure do it next spring, which is after Thanksgiving, Christmas, all the fun playing in the snow, Valentine's Day, Easter and Mommy's Birthday...
She received great reports from Dr. Jonathon. He says she's brushing really well and her teeth look nice and healthy. No cavaties.....but, we still have to work on getting the x-rays taken.

Lillian's appointment is tomorrow at 10am. Wish us luck!
