As Halloween approaches, the onslaught of spookiness creeps into everyday life. From creepy skeletons who hang from trees around the neighborhood to the mad rush of fright-fest movies that fill the neighborhood movie theater, there is a little something for everyone who wants a good jolt. Readers are not left out of the spine-tingling fun, and the following book is one of the most intriguing choices this season!
“The Fall,” by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, is the second book in “The Strain” trilogy and it is a horrific, fascinating roller-coaster ride of a scary tale that pits good vampires against bad, good science against bad, and good people against bad.
A vampire virus is running rampant in New York City and threatens to overtake the entire United States and the world if it is not stopped soon. It’s up to a small group of dedicated scientists and vampire hunters to team together to put a stop to what could be the end of the world as we know it. New York City and other major cities across the world are in total chaos as an all-out war between ancient Vampires who are intent on controlling the world battle it out, with humans stuck in the middle as bait and new recruits for the bloodsuckers.
Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the country’s leading epidemiologist with the CDC, has uncovered the cause for the new virulent strain of vampires, and has teamed up with Abraham Setrakian, a Holocaust survivor and longtime vampire hunter, to put an end to the madness that is overtaking the country. But as Goodweather and his team of vampire fighters struggle to bring an end to the violence, Goodweather also must protect his young son, Zack from the one source of evil that could bring a cataclysmic end to everything – the child’s own mother Kelly, who has become infected with the virus and is determined to bring her son into the vampiric fold.
Del Toro, who is best known as the Academy-award winning director of such deliciously scary movies as “The Devil’s Backbone,” “Hellboy” and “Hellboy II,” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” and Chuck Hogan have created a spine-tingling, action packed story that grabs the reader by the throat at the first page and doesn’t let go to the very end.

“The Fall” is written in such a fashion that you can absolutely see the events unfolding before your eyes as you breathlessly read along. That is the mark of good storytelling! The writers bring enough back story from “The Strain” into this tale to give the reader sufficient information about what has occurred previously to make “The Fall” a novel that stands well on it’s own. And I guarantee you’ll never look at another manhole cover again the same way after reading this novel!
