Three Kings

Our 'King Cakes'

In celebration of Three Kings yesterday, the girls and I made 'King Cakes'.

King Cakes: Take a tube of cinnamon rolls, unroll each one so they are in long strips. Pinch two of them together and twist them, then connect them in a circle, making a 'crown'. Use colorful frosting and sprinkles to decorate.

We had our neighbor, Tori, come over to help us make them. The girls had a blast. Lillian had pink frosting all over her mouth and even some behind her ear. Sprinkles covered our entire kitchen.
Alexa also wrote a letter to the Three Kings telling them she had been a good girl this past year. We left their slippers out by our nativity and the Three Kings brought them treats.

This isn't a holiday we've celebrated before, but I'm excited to make it a new tradition in our family. I researched the Mexican/Catholic traditions of celebrating and they have piƱata's, make king cakes, make special meals, write notes to the Three Kings and receive toys and treats. There are various ways to celebrate and other traditions that we will try in the future.

Knowing my family didn't celebrate this holiday, I spoke to Adam's mom to see if this was anything her or her family celebrated. She said she recalls their big celebration on Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) and not learning about the Three Kings until later when she studied in Mexico. The family she stayed with wrote letters to the Kings and left them in their slippers and then receieved treats from their wish lists. They also had pinata's and the day was all about treats, sweats and toys. It may not be a holiday either of our families celebrate, but I'm happy to have made it a new tradition with Adam and the girls.
