Book Review - On Hummingbird Wings by Lauraine Snelling

I adore hummingbirds - I think they are one of God's most exquisite creatures! So I was so thrilled to receive Lauraine Snelling's book, "On Hummingbird Wings" for review!

Gillian Ormsby has a demanding, all-encompassing career in New York as the Vice-president of Marketing for a high profile computer data company. Just when her company is on the brink of a takeover, she receives a distressing call from her younger sister Allison in California. Their mother is dying. Irritated, Gillian wants to pay no attention to the phone call. After all, their mother has claimed she has been dying far too many times already. But this time, Allison stresses, it actually seems like it might be serious.

Gillian finally decides to fly home for a quick visit only to find her mother’s beloved garden in shambles, the house in a mess, her sister mysteriously disappearing and her mother unwilling to get up from the bed, seriously willing herself to die. While she searches for ways to bring the chaos to order, she learns that her company has been taken over in her short absence and she is without a job. So with time on her hands, she sets about to find ways to bring her mother back to the land of the living, starting with the simple act of installing a hummingbird feeder outside her mother’s bedroom window, hoping that interest in the tiny birds will bring about a spark of interest.

As Gillian re-organizes her mother’s house and garden and cares for her mother, she meets Adam Bentley, a handsome neighbor and fellow garden aficionado, who is not only sympathetic to her plight, but willing to help her find solutions to the vast variety of family and personal problems that Gillian seems unable to get a handle on.

As Gillian eases back into the family that she had long-ago forsaken, she finds that perhaps the missing element in her life that she had unconsciously been longing for was the love of family and home. And more importantly, she also finds that she can take the time to find a love of her own with Adam if she will only find the courage to trust and be loved in return.

Family relationships are the key focus of Lauraine Snelling’s latest novel, “On Hummingbird Wings.” Older sister/younger sister dynamics, mother/daughter conflicts, even father/son relationships are examined in this lively and lovely inspirational story. Snelling pulls the threads of the several stories found in this novel into one satisfying overall read, concluding with a satisfying ending that readers will find endearing.
