Last fall Alexa had her preschool screening for her to be able to enter Kindergarten.
She went through a series of tests including height, weight, hearing, vision, developmental and her large and small motor skills.
She passed every single thing with flying colors. She even scored a perfect on her developmental test.
She was so proud of herself and we were so proud of her.
Now, if you have children, you know that every year when they have their 'well-check' appointments with their pediatrician they go through these similar tests with your child. Can you spell your name, how high can you count, can you hop on one foot, can you balance, what shape is this?, what letter is this?, is this a fruit or a vegetable?, is this line shorter or longer than this line, am I taller or shorter than you?, if I say ice is cold - what is fire?, ect ect ect....
Alexa is beginning to think that these little testing sessions are FUN. She always passes everything and knows everything and can do everything and gets so much praise for being great. She loves it.
In April, Alexa had her kindergarten round-up at her new school. We met with her potential teachers, took a tour around the school and visited with the school nurse who made sure that they had all Alexa's medical records on file. She highlighted 4 immunizations that Alexa still needed to get before she could start kindergarten.
Simple enough, right?
We made the appointment for this morning at 11. We had prepared Alexa a week in advance that she would be needing to get her shots so she wouldn't get sick when she started school. She told us last night she was going to be brave.
I picked her up this morning and brought her to the clinic. She was nervous, but held it together. We colored in the waiting room until her name was called. A gentleman took her height and weight. She is TINY!! She barely made the 10th percentile for weight and just about the 30th percentile for height. She had her vision checked - 20/20 vision - Perfect! Then we were brought to a room and Alexa was asked to hop up on the examining table. She had her hearing tested - Perfect!! I sat by her, cuz I could tell she knew that the shots were coming up soon. The nurse looked on his computer and must have heard Alexa and I talking about 'shots'. He said, Nope! No shots for you today. Alexa's eyes widened and she looked up at me for reassurance. I questioned him, because of what the school had highlighted for us. He said, those are the shots she needs for kindergarten, but Alexa has already had those shots at her last 'well-check' with Dr. Joshi. Alexa was super excited and had the biggest smile on her face knowing she was going to make it through the appointment pain free. I was happy for her, too.
(I had him check twice and the doctor check it again just to be sure. My guess is that the school highlighted the ones that were required for kindergarten, but didn't bother to to see that Alexa actually had them done already.)
The nurse proceeded to ask us a few more questions and then sent in the doctor.
She did another exam of Alexa, blood pressure, reflexes, listened to her chest, examined her tummy..ect.
Then came all the questions...can you write your name, show me, what is this shape, can you count to 10, can you jump on one foot, how bout the other foot, can you balance on one foot, how bout the other one, can you skip, can you duck walk, what is this letter...ect.
Alexa was in heaven. She knew everything and yet again got so much praise for being such a little smarty pants.
I was a little disappointed that we had to go through it all again. It wasn't necessary because Alexa has done all of this a few times before. The main thing is we thought we needed her shots and since we didn't need them, all the other stuff was a little redundant.
Oh well!! Alexa was happy and I still agreed to take her shopping even though she didn't have to go through the trauma of getting her shots.
Her lucky day!
