Knocking on Heaven's Door

There are so many people struggling with life, with death, with sickness, and hardships everyday. Family, friends, people I come in contact with, as well as myself, all have  difficult issues we are dealing with on a day to day basis.  Recently there seems to be many people I know of that are dealing with Cancer, Diseases, Death etc.... And it captures my heart deeply. ... I was driven to write this today.  May God Grant each of you Blessings of Faith, Hope, Health, Love and Light, now and always.
Knocking on Heaven's Door

Here we are on this earth each day,
knocking on Heaven's door
We live our lives from day to day
 as no one has before

Our souls are filled as we live,
 and breathe through every day
Like leaves on the Tree of Life,
 we're blown around  each way

The challenge is to do our best
with all that we are given
For that's the quest for all of us
 before we go to Heaven

Sow kindness along the path you walk,
as everyone needs love
Then look around and  you will see
the Sun shining from above

Water often with compassion
and soon your seeds will sprout
Fertilize with Faith and Hope,
and watch them grow about

With every sunrise the sun also sets,
 a revolving  fact of life
Out of  darkness there comes Light,
 Hope for all life's strife

So as we knock on Heaven's door,
let's focus on life's best
Make Peace, Hope, Love and Light,
your every day request

For when we live each day so full,
that we  are all we can be
It's then that we can figure out,
the Circle of Life you see

Shine your Light for all to see,
live as no one has before.
Then with certainty and clarity of Life;
go knock on Heaven's door

Lovely Spring

Hi there! I have a great Spring card to share with you tonight. I really can't wait for Spring to get here. We have had lots of rain (much needed), but I am a tried and true California girl and I like my sunshine!

For my card, I used the Spring Florals Card Kit from Gina K. Designs and one of the frames from the Lovely Labels set. I added a piece of print cardstock from October Afternoon and a little bit of yellow crochet trim from my stash, otherwise the cardstock, floral stamps and pearls were from the Spring Florals Card Kit. I love that you can open your set and immediately have ideas and cardstock ready to go.

For even more ideas with the Spring Florals stamp set, please check out these links:

There are many more projects that can be found in the StampTV gallery by clicking on this tag: springflorals

Enjoy all the samples tonight! If you haven't purchased this stamp set yet, please take note that the free Card Kit will be included with each purchase until March 18th. At that time, the next card kit stamp set will be released.

Recipe Review: Coffee Flavored Beef Roast

A week or so ago, I made the coffee-flavored beef roast that I blogged about here. I served it with the potatoes, carrots and mushroom/onion mix that it was cooked with, creamed spinach and homemade biscuits

The only mistake I made was putting in too much water with the roast and vegetables to cook. I should have stuck with the directions. It watered down the seasonings, but otherwise this was an EXCELLENT recipe...my roast has never before turned out so perfect, so tender. I was amazed. I swear, it was like eating my Granny's Sunday roast--that perfect!

You HAVE to make this recipe...Reagan ate her entire helping of roast, two servings of creamed spinach (Kroger special!), her carrots, mushrooms and her biscuit. SHE NEVER EATS THAT MUCH! In fact, we have to bribe her to get her to eat more than a few bites..that's a testament to just how good this recipe was. And the biscuits? OH MY GOSH..PEREFECT...steamy and soft on the inside, crusty and hot on the outside. Trust me, go to this biscuit recipe and you will NEVER go back. And it's so easy there's no reason to buy frozen or canned ones at the store ever again.

Here's the recipe! I promise you'll love it!

Classic Biscuit~Country Living
1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
2.5 cups all purpose flour (sifted twice before measuring)
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 cup + 2 tbsp cold buttermilk
1 tbsp melted butter

Heat oven to 475. Cut butter into small cubes and freeze for 15 minutes. Stir the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Cut in the butter using either a pastry blender, two knives or your fingers til mixture resembles a coarse meal. Stir in the buttermilk using a fork just until the dough forms. Knead 3-4 turns on lightly floured surface and pat into a 7*10 rectangle. Cut out biscuits using a 3 inch cutter (gathering scraps until all the dough is used). Place 2 inches apart on a baking pan, brush the tops with melted butter. Bake on the top shelf of the oven for 16-18 minutes. Serve warm with honey.

2 Buttermilk Tips!
If you don't have buttermilk, use soured milk instead. Make soured milk by combining 1 tbsp lemon juice or white vinegar with 1 cup plus 1 tbsp milk. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes til thickened. OR keep a container of SACO Cultured Buttermilk Blend in your cupboard (refrigerate after opening--oops forgot to do this!) to use on those occassions when you need buttermilk. This stuff is awesome! Of course the soured milk works too, but we southerners love our buttermilk and it adds that 'from scratch' taste to the biscuits!

Having a family member who has received a life-saving heart transplant, I can personally vouch for the family’s gratitude for the organ donor, and the shared grief that facilitates the transplant. The gift of life through donation is a precious one.

Stephen Lovely's novel “Irreplaceable” takes a look at one person's decision to become an organ donor and how that one decision affected so many lives. It is a brilliant novel, full of emotion and strength, and most importanly Lovely gives light to the importance of the critical need for organ donors today.

Becoming an organ donor was very important to Isabel Howard-Voorman, and she convinced her husband Alex to sign a card acknowledging that he knew of her wishes. And like a good, love-struck husband, he put the card away in his wallet, never dreaming it would ever see the light of day.

Until the day Isabel was killed while riding her bike by a reckless driver.

Painfully, Alex agrees to allow Isabel’s heart, along with other organs, to be taken for transplant.
Janet Cocoran has been waiting for a new heart for a long time. The heart disease that is slowly killing her is also destroying her once close-knit family and threatens her marriage, one sickly beat at a time. In ghoulish desperation, she would watch the news, anxiously awaiting news of a fatal car accident, hoping the victim would be an organ donor who would match her. It was a miraculous day when she learned there was a heart on the way for her … Isabel’s heart.

A year later, Janet has recovered well from her transplant and tracks down the name of the family of her donor, despite recommendations from the transplant team that she not do that. She sends a letter to Alex, thanking him for his wife’s gift of life. But Alex is still grieving Isabel’s loss and doesn’t want to communicate with Janet. Telling Isabel’s mother Bernice of the intrusive letter, Alex is shocked to find out that she had been emailing with Janet’s mother for a long time and knew all about the transplant Janet underwent and her progress.

Feeling betrayed, Alex tries to move on with his life, but the persistent notes from Janet, and the gentle nagging of his mother-in-law keep the subject on his mind. It is the sudden appearance of Jasper Klass, the man who hit Isabel with his truck, and his intense and creepy interest in finding the person who had received Isabel’s heart that would propel Alex into finally meeting Janet, and coming to grips with the fact that she was alive due to his wife’s death. And when seeking forgiveness for his actions Klass threatens the safety of that heart beating within Janet’s chest, Alex knows he must do whatever it takes to protect the irreplaceable gift of life Isabel so selflessly gave.

Dallas-born author Stephen Lovely takes readers inside the world of heart transplants in his novel, “Irreplaceable.” Stunningly accurate, Lovely captures the heartbreak of losing a loved one, the overwhelming guilt of taking a life, and the amazement of regaining life in this vivid tale. His characters are so real readers will feel they experience first-hand the waves of emotions that tumble over their fictional lives and Lovely’s research and descriptions of the transplant procedure and recovery are astonishingly exact.

HP LAB.

Here is a set of ads for the HP Retail Publishing group that I had the pleasure of working on and recently finishing during my busy days and nights working at Goodby, Silverstein and Partners. The idea was to create these little white environments that could house the HP products, an employee, and a set of modular illustrations running up the background wall that changed out for each ad.
Nice!! now I'm a new fan of HP. I use one of their product and i love it =) These awesome designs are made by "Lab Partners-Design And Illustration" Enjoy their other wonderful works in here

Some new Digi designs

Lately, I've been doing some design work for the website at Bible Truth Music (aka BTM). My husband works for BTM during the week and is an evangelist & we travel representing BTM on weekends. My husband is responsible for designing two weekly promotional emails & BTM has recently launched their new & improved website and I've been able to design some of their promotional graphics. I don't design the covers of the CDs/Books but I design the promotional materials that include those graphics. I try to challenge myself to do some new technique on each item. I am having so much fun and it helps my husband with his work on the website too. :)

Here are a couple of my favorite recent items (in case you're interested, clicking the pics will take you to the appropriate page on the BTM website):

This one was in the weekly promotional email (our daughter calls my husband the "Spam King" because the mailing list is over 12,000 emails - LOL) and is on the website:

This is only on the website.

This one, I originally designed as a promotional postcard that will be sent out to LOTS of people. :) It is also being used on the website.

And here is my new all-time favorite. For this one, I designed the digi paper behind the CD cover from scratch. I was so excited -- OK maybe I'm a bit of a dork but I've never designed my own digi paper before. What you can't see in the pic is that the speckles are tiny leaves. So many of the music items seem to have more masculine colors or the bright primary colors for the children. It was fun to design with a more feminine theme.

I hope this didn't sound too much like a commercial. I'm just enjoying my digi-designing and wanted to share. My friend that got me into digi just may have created a monster!! ;)

Olympics come to a close this weekend...

I'm so happy that it's Friday. :)

We've still been obsessing over the Olympics. We've been letting the girls stay up to watch, too. It's been nice actually. I don't feel as stressed out about getting them to bed before 8 every night. Alexa hasn't been having naps recently at school, so she has been tired and usually falls asleep in her Papa's arms on the floor curled up with blankets and pillows watching the latest Olympic event. Lillian on the other hand, has been getting used to staying up later and likes to stay up until Adam and I want to go to bed. Little stinker.

I think we're ready for it to be over and I'm anxious to see the closing ceremony on Sunday. GO TEAM USA!

I have been trying VERY hard to get Alexa's dance recital video posted on here, but I'm afraid the file is just too big. I'm going to have Adam try to splice it this weekend, so I can show you at least a small portion of her performance. It's worth watching, trust me.

Have a great weekend.

Sew Many Cards New Release & Blog Hop

Can you believe it is time for new releases already? Hopefully you arrived  here from Jeanette but if you didn't you can start  HERE where you will find the entire blog hop information.  I don't know where February has gone but....I sure had fun playing with this cute image of Morty fishing.  Isn't he adorable?  I stamped the cloud background with a Hero Arts background stamp and colored Morty with copics.  I used SU Bermuda Bay cardstock for my base and then some aqua ribbon I had on hand to make my "waves".  I saw this card that Heather made here and just thought it was adorable so I knew as soon as I saw this image what I wanted to do with him!  Be sure and look around her blog as she has some really cute stuff!!!  I got lost over there for quite a while.  To make my waves I just laid down some scor tape and just pleated my ribbon as I went - I wanted a messy wave look.  As we do each month each DT member will be drawing a comment from their new release post who will win the image they are showcasing so.....be sure to leave me some love and get a chance to win this fabulous image!  If you don't win, no worries you can purchase it here.

We are so proud to have two sponsors this month.  They are Simon Says and Soft Pencil.   Simon Says Stamps is generously sponsoring us again this month and they are donating a $10 gift certificate to one lucky blog hopper!  Simon Says Stamps has a wonderful selection of stamps and various crafting supplies at wonderful prices.  Soft Pencil is a new sponsor for Sew Many Cards and the very talented owner, Elizabeth Pujalka, has some AMAZING images in her store here.  She has graciously donated a $25 voucher to the Soft Pencil Shop.  Here is a little bit about her:

"Hello everyone! My name is Elizabeth Pujalka and I'm the illustrator and designer behind Softpencil Digital Stamps, home of Michu and his lovely friends, where you can find cute illustrations for your crafting needs.  My illustrations are a homage to Nature and their creatures, where a sweet child, a simple flower or a fagile animal become protagonists.  I invite you to know my whimsical world, plenty of gorgeous characters and to enjoy creating with them!"

Be sure to check my blog often but especially on March 5th as I have had the honor of playing with one of Elizabeth's adorable designs and I'll be showcasing my project then.

This card was made using Angela's cute Butterfly image which, lucky you, is the Freebie Friday this week.  Be sure to hurry on over and pick it up here as it will only be available for one week.  I decided to make a long card that will fit in a "regular letter" envelope (9 1/2 x 4 approx).  I love Basic Grey and used that beautiful butterfly as my background and again used my copics to color in my butterflies and then sponged some ink around the edges.  That cute ribbon I just picked up at Walmart the other day - LOVE it!

That's about it for me today....be sure to hop along with us as there are some fabulous prizes!!!  Next up is

and I'm sure she has something awesome to show us - she always does!  I'm headed there myself!

Reusable Babysitting Information Board

Ok, this is PURE GENIUS!!! If we ever actually have a need for a sitter (other than the occasional grandparent-date-night-sitting), then I'll definitely be using this!!!!

Godquote #7

The best human on earth can fail you but not God. Never...

ALEXA'S DANCE RECITAL

Updates

My mom is doing somewhat better and has been released from the hospital. She's being sent home with pain medication and a physical therapist. My aunt and I continue to try to get her to move to Alabama where her family is close. Thanks to everyone for your prayers.

Finances and Walmart Update: I am averaging going to Walmart approximately once a month. I've really tried hard NOT to go at all per my agreement with myself, but with Target being 30 minutes away in good weather (we've had sooo little of that!) it's hard not to just stop by Walmart and grab what I need. Luckily I've kept my purchases to my list only. And we're saving a ton more money! I've also really slowed down on using coupons at Kroger and have been cooking more 'from sratch' foods and using more fruits and vegetables...very few coupons for those items. And get this, we're saving much more money than before. We made our "Dream Home" savings goal for January and as of February 26th, we'll have made our February goal. I'm so excited and I've already figured up the amount we need for March to stay on target.

Homeschooling is coming along slowly, but we're getting there. I've really neglected my homeschooling blog--I really wanted to have an outline for others that were confused by the whole startup process..but I think I have enough on my plate for now..I'll post there when I can.

I think that's it for us! Stay warm everyone!

The Simple Woman's Daybook 2/23/10 Edition

I haven't participated in this in a while, but I love getting a chance to reflect on the recent past. If you're interested in joining, check out this link and join the Simple Woman's Daybook!

FOR TODAY
Outside my window....I thought it WASN'T snowing...but it is and I can just make out the flurries in the light of the corner lamp post. Earlier this week it smelled like spring...snow covered spring...but it's coming....
I am thinking about what we're going to do in school tomorrow and how I'm ever going to manage to get everything done that needs to get done.
I am thankful for my family, that I have a husband I can trust and count on and a daughter who still loves snuggling up to me no matter how many times I mess up as a mom!
From the learning rooms: I'm hoping to do a science project with Reagan tomorrow! (And here's to hoping it doesn't involve something growing in the fridge..I really need to clean it out!!)
From the kitchen--we had Chinese tonight so no cooking here, although I found an awesome recipe for pancakes yesterday (which is what Reagan requested for lunch)...they were so fluffy!
I am wearing jeans and an Auburn tee
I am creating a better system for all the supplies we've needed to start homeschooling
I am going to bed soon! SOO TIRED!
I am reading a cheesy historical romance, What Happens When A Woman Trusts God and waiting for the rest of my reading list to be fulfilled by some wondrous person on paperbackswap.com!
I am hoping that my mom gets better soon and realizes that she can have a great future without subjecting herself to an abusive relationship.
I am hearing Josh laughing in the next room, the distant sound of a few cars on the main roads and a train (the Midwest is still very much powered by trains)
Around the house I can't wait to start airing it out in the next three months and put up some spring decorations
One of my favorite things is planning surprises for Reagan on the holidays
A few plans for the rest of the week: school, grocery shopping, cleaning out the refrigerator..ugh!
Here is picture for thought I am sharing
Doesn't this just simply sing spring??

Now i can show you .....

The box i made for valerie over at
